The Mel Meter and the Tragic but touching History to why Paranormal Investigators Use it

The history behind the Mel Meter and why it is so popular in paranormal investigating is truly a sad but touching story and one I can relate too with some of the devices I personally chose to use tallied with the grief of losing my dad so young.

What is a mel meter?

If your reading this and haven’t seen a mel meter before or heard of one, it is a device that:

👻 Reads both EMF fluctuations and varancies in temperature
👻 Can read in two functions, normal and high speed mode
👻 Reads lower and higher frequency then a standard K II
👻 Is made to fit comfortably in your hand and also has a backlit screen to make it easier to read from a distance

The first person to invent this device was Gary Galka, a electrical engineer after sadly losing his daughter.

On September 24th 2004, Gary’s beloved daughter Melissa, was involved in a car accident where she sustained life threatening injuries. On September 28th, her family had to make the heart wrenching decision to take her off life support. She was only 17 years old.

Almost immediately, the family claims that Melissa affectionately known as Mel was trying to make her presence known in what they called ADC – after death communications. The TV would turn on by itself, lights would turn on and off and she would interfere with different electrical items within the house. They could smell her perfume and eventually they believed they could feel her hugging and kissing them.

After 6 months passed, Gary began researching into the paranormal. He read books and watched the television shows and tried his own EVP sessions. Melissa would talk through the recorder and they would compare the voice to her message bank on her phone which they kept open so they could hear her voice. It was around this time that Gary realised that at this time, there was no equipment which was specifically made for contacting spirits.

And from this point Gary decided to make the Mel Meter 8704. The Word Mel comes from Melissa his daughter who was born in ‘87’ and passed in ‘04’.

Gary later featured in ghost adventures with his story and his latest invention. Gary and his wife donate a portion of his profits from the device to organisations who help families who are dealing with grief.

So, the next time you pick up or see the Mel Meter 8704, take a minute to remember this story and appreciate the love between Father and Daughter and that true love never dies one way or another.

  1. What a beautiful history into this device! An article that opens our eyes into seeing more than what we hold in our hands, but what is so dearly held within the inventor’s heart. Thank you!
