STAVERLEY CEMETERY Church | Mortuary Chapels | History

Last night I headed I headed out alone to investigate a abandoned chapel that I had been tiped off was open to have a wonder. When I got there, it had securely been sealed back up, which I believe generally happens all the time with this location.

Ive heard stories that it is eerie atomsphere at night, while others have stated in the day its felt a peaceful atmosphere.

It is located in a graveyard which had a few families visiting at the time so didn’t think it was morally right to conduct any kind of communication during my visit.

History

There is very little information on its history but have found that graveyard as a whole was founded in 1884 and there are 25 Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) graves here; 11 from WW1 and 14 from WW2.

On old maps it does state it was a mortuary Chapel and further articles go on to say that it was built after 1883 . It looks like there was debates on whether it should be built or not but clearly it was as its still there today and has two chapels.

One chapel I would assume was where women went in it was address with ladies and the other one for gentleman.

  1. Even though not much history was found, you can tell just by looking at it that there must some deep history behind these old buildings. Such beautiful architecture, too.
