Watnall Holy Well Nottingham

A well I’ve sourced out a few weeks ago to visit. I can’t believe how many times I’ve passed the street it’s on and never even realised it was there, and I can’t say it’s a commonly known well amongst Nottingham folk either.

A plaque near the well’s entrance has a local piece of folklore recorded.

This relates that a local boy who lived opposite was very ill and bedridden. A local priest called for water to be drawn for the boy from the well. This was done, and the boy became well.

Interestingly it’s the only legend of this type, one which records a cure – in all the Nottinghamshire holy wells. However, it is impossible to source a date for this occurrence and who the boy was.

It’s believed by historians that the well probably dates back to pre-Medieval in origin, meaning it could be one of the oldest wells in the UK.

The story of the little boy could be a legend given to the well to cast interest in the Catholic reglion during a time holy wells was of interest in the Catholic faith. However, normally, with most folklore tales, when stripped back, there is a small element of truth to these stories to where the legend stems from, so who knows… a bit of a mystery and one I’m pleased to have covered.
