The remains of the original St Augustine’s church in Rugeley in the UK, which became the parish church in the 12th century, have come to be known as the Old Chancel.
The 12th-century church had just a nave and a chancel. A lady chapel was added in the 13th century and a tower in the 14th. A north aisle was added, too, but in the 19th century, the church had become too small for the town’s growing population and was in a poor state of repair. A new St Augustine’s, which was
dedicated in January 1923, was built on a plot of land opposite.
At the side of the chancel is the family home, the Rugeley Posioner.

During 1855 and 1856, William made his name notorious throughout the world as the details of his life and crimes came to light. The case was reported on a massive scale – easily equal to that of the Wests or Harold Shipman in modern times. Palmer was shown to be that most despised of beings – a doctor who killed those that he should have been caring for.

He was eventually hanged for the murder of his friend, John Parsons Cook (grave pictured) – though he was also charged with murdering his own wife, Ann, and was suspected of poisoning four of his children as well as several other friends and relations.

His ghost is said to appear to those who linger outside his childhood home…
I didn’t see Williams’ apparition on my visit, but I may have stirred his spirit as I did receive a few interesting responses. Check out my video below:
