After researching some places to visit, I came across a detailed blog on Litchfield lore, which stated there was a nuns well located on Cannock Chase in Staffordshire.
For those of you who don’t know, Cannock Chase is a hotsport for paranormal activity. Sightings vary from UFO’s, black-eyed children to even a werewolf.
However, I had never come across any history relating to nuns being on the chase nor had I heard of any stories relating to a nun haunting it, so it somewhat intrigued me to try and find this well to see if it did indeed exist still to this day. Not many photographs had been published recently of it, and it’s not really a haunting that is strongly associated with the chase.
So we set off to a woodlands named Nunswell Park in search of the well. After walking the entire length of the woodlands in the pouring rain, we came to an open area, which led up to a fence with a sign saying ‘nuns well’. We then had to cross a field, with horses in, and at the end of the field there, it stood a tree which underneath was indeed a well.
History
Well, there is no concrete historical evidence to suggest that nuns were ever on this part of the chase, yet some believe an abbey may have been situated not too far in Radmore.
Detailed in the History of the County of Stafford’s section on the Abbey at Radmore, it states, ‘King Stephen granted Radmore, probably between 1135 and 1139, to Clement, Hervey, and their companions as the site for a hermitage…Bishop Roger de Clinton confirmed this grant and gave the hermits permission to follow any rule they wished and to receive and instruct any holy women who came to them after adopting a rule”. This suggests women (Nuns) could very well have been at Radmore.
The legend and Ghost of the Well

Legend has it that the well has healing powers, specifically for sore eyes, and takes its name from a nun who was pushed down the well and covered over.
The story goes that two farm labourers found the sealed up well and unearthed the remains of the murdered nun within it.
It is stated that upon revealing her body, the apparition of the nun appeared in front of the farm labourers, and it’s said that she now haunts the area.
If you’re visiting, just be cautious! The tree and well is surrounded by an electric fence. The fence is not meant to be working, but I was not really willing to get a shock to find out, so you’re limited to how close you can get to it.
